Uruguay is a beautiful South American nation with 3,5 million population known for its verdant interior and beach-lined coast. The capital, Montevideo, revolves around Plaza Independencia, once home to a Spanish citadel.
Uruguay proudly display four stars on their jersey – though “only” having won two World Cup trophies! The other two represent Olympic Gold medals later recognized by FIFA as World Championships. Uruguay finished fourth in 1954 but didn’t qualify for the next tournament. In 2006 they also didn’t qualify but finished fourth in 2010.
Famous head coach Oscar Tabarez, leads his country Uruguay for the fourth time (1990, 2010, 2014, 2018) at the World Cup, and hopes incoming this one are as high as ever.
Uruguay are a star-studded team with players like Edinson Cavani and an all-time favorite Luis Suarez.
Suarez has been a genuine No. 9 forward over the last 8 years, scoring at least 30 goals for his clubs in six of the last seven seasons. However, Cavani scored at least 40 goals in each of the last two seasons, but has a different role by playing a bit below the top line, helping out defensively.
Another interesting player to watch will be midfielder Matias Vecino 26-year-old. He had a superb season at Inter Milan after some great seasons at Fiorentina. He’s creative, good on the ball and also very aggressive to recover the ball.
Finally Uruguay has a strong defence with Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin leading the back line to perfection.
