Retired from Juventus, Gigi Buffon received already an incredible offer from Paris Saint-Germain who have taken the first steps in trying to persuade the 40-year-old Italian star to come in France capital for a two-year contract.
Buffon would come free of contract from Juve and PSG have made an offer of €8 million-per-year (£7m/$9.4m), almost double his current salary at Juventus.
PSG feels that the addition of an expert goalkeeper such as Buffon will improve their chances in Champions League, as well as add a respected personality to the dressing room. Further more, It has been suggested that Buffon will be expected to mentor Areola.
Alphonse Areola, who will play for France at World Cup Russia 2018, made 43 appearances in all competitions in 2017-18, is currently negotiating a new contract at the club, while second-choice stopper Kevin Trapp is reportedly dispensable.
Buffon said a decision on his future would be made in the coming days, with a potential role on the staff at Juventus one of the other interesting offers he has received.
PSG President Nasser Al Khelaifi believes ‘any team would want’ Gigi Buffon, but confirms Alphonse Areola will remain the club’s number one.
“Buffon is a fantastic goalkeeper, charismatic, and a true gentleman, but our first choice is Areola and he will be next season as well”
On the other hand 25-year-old Areola, whose own deal ends in June 2019 said: “Because if I’m not the number one anymore, it would mean the season I’ve just finished has all counted for nothing”
PSG, who won the French league title in 2018, will be taken over by coach Thomas Tuchel next season. He succeeds Spanish Unai Emery.
After amazing 17-year spent at Juventus, Buffon was given an emotional send-off by team-mates, opposition players and fans before Juve celebrated their seventh successive Scudetto at Turin Allianz Stadium.
